Purple firefish took a leap:( New yellow watchman really shy... thoughts on stocking?

The Flamebacks are a lovely Angel! One of my favorites!!!! I hope you get a smaller one, and that it acclimates well to your tank. If you are ever needing to get rid of it, please let me know

Hi Jim,

I'll definitely put you first on the list for when it outgrows the tank (and I assume it will eventually do so.) It should come in at 1-2", but if it ever gets to 3" I'll probably let it go if I don't plan for an upgrade at that point. Also, if I see to much tension between the fish, or it seems stressed even after well acclimated, I will let you know and we'll figure a way to catch him:) This happened when I got a yellow tank for my 36g. It grew an inch in just a couple of months and I had to sell it off to Geo. Luckily it was extremely fat and happy. :)

On another note, my watchman is eating (yay!!!) Last night I saw him venture out for a bit, but still hadn't seen him eat. Just now I fed mysis and he was ravenous (probably from not eating for so long!) I'm so relieved.

I think the Yellow Watchmen are very good at acting like they aren't eating! My brother in law had one in his 90gal cube, and he saw it one day from the back of the tank. He said "Jeez! I thought that fish was gone a long time ago! I haven't seen it in over 4 months!"

Mine used to hide quite a bit, but it was always there in the morning....even if I never "watched" it eat. They are pretty good at surviving in a tank. I'm glad it's still there for you, cause they are pretty cool fish:)

Hi Jim,

Yeah, I think he's neat- I've ordered a pistol for him so can't wait to see if they pair. I guess it'll be the same as waiting to see if a clown will take to it's anemone host. :p

Yes you will have to wait and see. I tried 2 bubble tips when I had the Black Saddleback clown, and it never took to them. Then the Anem ended up wasting away. I could never get them to take any food!

the way they push the sand out when they tunnel. I had a candystripe for about 2 years that I never knew I still had until I purchased a randall's goby it paired up with. never saw the little guy

Wow, this angel is gorgeous! It came in at about 1.75" and is swimming normally. I think I saw it eat some of the live brine, but not sure. I'll feed again in a few hours.

:)

Snap some pics if you can. Actually, maybe you could start a thread here on your tank? I'm sure interested. Daveverdo said it was pretty automated, and I'd like to see what you've done.

Sure Jim. I did just happen to get a new camera and tripod, too. I'll go ahead and get that up this weekend. Cool request:)

I didn't see this post of yours.

I'm really surprised as I've heard (and ime) Saddlebacks most readily take to hosts (and aren't very picky.) Way back I bought one thinking it was a black ocellaris. It jumped in my BTA right away- but I had to catch it the next day to return it to the store as it wouldn't pair with my ocellaris, lol! Also, I wouldn't be surprised if that fish was sick- clowns are usually pretty easy to get to eat if they are healthy.

Were the BTAs wild caught? It is way easier to acclimate the clones, ime. Though, I've only had success with two out of the (too many) anemones that I've had. One was a haddoni, the other was a cloned BTA.

Angela,
I added the BTA quite a while after I had the Saddleback in the tank, and it (the fish) was already pretty fond of my Anthellia. The clown was a great eater, and probably gained about 1" of length in the time I had him. I added the Angler after the clown was in, and I think it was just a matter of time. I could never get the BTA to take any food though, and it just ended up shriveling up and dying. Hopefully you have better luck with yours if you get another one!

Oh, I think I misunderstood. I won't be doing an anemone again unless I have a very large tank. The BTAs are just too much trouble if they walk a small tank. The sebae and haddoni get very large, and other host anemones are quite tricky/ difficult to keep in captivity.

I did try a couple of tricky corals this time that I really hope make it. I tacked on a yellow fiji leather and a red goniopora. The leathers, I've heard, are hit and miss to ship and to acclimate (particularly large specimens.) I ordered a small one, but still it's at least 6" (looks good so far, but no polyps out yet.) -00- I also got a red goniopora. They are still hit and miss, but this seems to be the best luck specimen in captivity. I fed some selcon to the tank today and the goni finally came out of full retraction- but the polyps have yet to fully expand. This is a wait and see, but also I need to be quite dilligent in keeping the water quality up so that I can feed heavily enough.

The Leather should open up for you pretty soon, as they are usually pretty hardy. I'm glad you went with the Red variety of the Goni. They are the most likely of the Goni's to survive, and IMO they look completely amazing! I love finding red or orange corals, as there are not very many out there, and it makes for such a nice contrast to the more common green colored corals. Hope you have good luck with everything!

Also, good idea not trying an Anem in a 20gal. Walking around and knocking things over was another reason that I never really tried them again. I'd rather have an LPS or a Softie that a clown would host

Hey Jim.

Actually, the yellow leather is a difficult specimen to acclimate. It's hardy if it acclimates, but many have no luck. So, I'm crossing my fingers. I won't be asking for a refund if this one doesn't make it.

Yeah, the red goni is gorgeous. I love red, which is why I put the red macro in the tank. I'll only pull it if I fill to the brim with coral... we'll see:) The goni is amazing colored- particularly under actinic.

D'accord. I am hoping they'll host the leather, goni, or bubble coral I got. Time will tell...

:)
