Purple Lobophytum

Hi,

Saw one of these for sale the other day and was looking to see if this is a natural phenotype or just "dyed" this color. Can lobophytums get "dyed" like a colt coral?

Thanks,

I have a purple lobophytum I purchased from DD. Definately not dyed. There may be some dyed ones out there so I would be careful but I suspect they are more difficult to dye than fleshier corals such as colt or capnella.

depends on how purple it is. Some can have a slight purplish hue under some lights, but if it's purple like grape bubble gum I'd be suspicious. Really need a photo of the specific one you are looking at to know for sure.

very often variations of thick branching sinularia are misidentified and mislabeled as rare colorful lobophytons. Its all to do with polyp types and structure.

Here is a pic of my coral. The polyps are deep purple but unfortunately aren't out now. I can try to send a pic when they are.

definitely want to see it polyped out. Lobophytums have two types of polyps just the same as sacrophytons, large flower like polyps that extend out and smaller polyps in between that stay short and look kinda like goosebumps. Sinularias look fuzzier and have only one type of polyp throughout the corals structure.
