I am from the UK and would like to get hold of some purple monster. However, I need the latin generic name for it because nobody has heard of it over here as purple monster.

thanks

You probably wont find the real colorfull one unless you buy a frag that originated from the original colony.

I have a frag of A. Maryae from the red sea and its light purple w/ very light blue polyps. Doesn't the "Purple Monster" have white polyps?

the PM does have white polyps, but white polyps can look blue/purple pending light source.

there's been much debate over the years about the species name for the PM. Valida and lokani seem the most popular.

Here is the standard bit on the PM straight from Tyree's site.

this is a purple lokani that looks a heckuvalot like the "true" PM i have in my frag tank (still small)

I thought the Pm was very thick branched, thus slow growing, heavy coralite structures, and white polyps over very very deep pruple base. I dont own one so cant say, I do have the Oregon Tort though, and its much different from the Cali Tort, very very blue.

I know, those pics kinda stink. No offense b/c I know they have been around forever but I would like to see what the real thing looks like. Ill post a pic of my A. Maryae tonight when I get off work. It is very thick branched and very slow growing. Looks like a dinosaur coral. It does'nt look like lokani to me though. On the link it says valida but thats one thick branched valida! Who knows.
