Purple Polyp Cap - Placement Question

I got a piece of the purple polyp cap from the frag swap. I placed it at about the same distance from my lights as my other caps ( approx 16" from a 250W 20K bulb). Its coming out slowly. I'm wondering how it was previously lit.

I'm guessing there were not a lot of PPC donators. Anyone know how it was lit or who donated it?

Brian- I keep all of my caps down low (24+") and theydo fine. As you know, some corals just take longer to get used to our systems. Good luck

Thanks Mark

The pale base color made me think it might want to be deeper than my other caps.

I saw your post on Kim's placement question. I guess as SPSs go, those aren't light demanding. It seems that, in general, the fuzzy SPS can be further away then the smooth ones. What would you consider a light demanding SPS?

It depend on species and also the look you want to "drive" out of a color. Lets take the candlelight since it was on the list. If you put it high, it will get bright highlighted tips and historically, it you place lower it will the branches will get more of that color.

Nasuta's love light. That is one of the reason the Pink Lemonade can achieve different colors on the base. It also has to do with the spectrum of light, but we are not talking about that.

Some acros are trial and error. I have moved the majority of my pieces more than one to find where they are happy and also what contrast's each color to get the best visual appearance to my eye.

This is the kind of stuff I like. Everyone has diffrent experiences with a coral, but as a collector, I usually have a pretty good idea before hand because I like true aquacultured generations; aquaculture meaning hobbyist and not maricultured in the ocean.

I have lokanis that do best directly under a halide where others do better in between lights. Lokani's are a "deepwater" coral, but in may tanks they look great balsted with light.

I hope this helps. You can always PM me too with individual questions as well.

Rules of thumb expecially with SPS placement are hard to derive. Each tank is different, and what may look good in one spot in one tank may look like pooh in another.

Trial and error is the best placement advice one can give, I move mine several times.

Due to flow, light, and water parameter differences in each of our tanks, its nearly impossible.

I am finding I have too much light and most do better towards the bottom, but I have 250DEs that are close to the water on a shallow tank.

Personal preference is the defining factor as well. Some LOVE the pastel look of the Probido, Zeo tanks.....I love how they bring out some things, but am of the opinion they are starved and are too "colored".

In a tank like mine, with smaller water volume compared to yours Brian, and running a BB system....my colors change rapidly. Its riding the edge of super saturated, dark, vibrant colors is what I really enjoy currently. It seems to bring out ALL colors for ALL pieces across the gamit, showing the colorful tips and little differeneces that make each piece shine.

Mark rode this edge very well with his current tank, and I have really enjoyed seeing the success he has had with it. He was able to get some amazing colors, even to the point of heckling me when his superman digi was blue and mine wasn't. I hope he has the same great results with the new tank, because his new tank will have a new personality for him to get used to. I am sure, he will whip that bronco into shape and show me up soon enough. I just need to enjoy it while I can!!!

Guess what, I moved the Superman digi lower and now it is blue........how was yours Mark?.....:p :p ;)

Trial and error, and flow/light/stable water params give the best colors.

I did recently read that it is thought that the "blue" corals come from deeper depths. Most of the smooth skinned pieces, are "deepwater", but trying to mimic the ocean is a big mistake and our tanks compared to the ocean is apples and oranges.

See what works for you.....

for my purple polyp cap, its placed in the middle of the tank. I use to place it really high but I don't have room up top for it anymore. When it was up top though that's when the colors of the cap enhanced the most! the purple polyps were blinding bright! now that it's in the middle the purple on the polyps are just..ehhh..

Thanks for the examples. What's your lighting setup like. Bulbs (W/K)? What's the distance from the water line to the bulbs, to the top of the rock and and to the bottom of the tank?

I was looking at your blog. Nice tank. I like the Milli's too. Your Bazooka Joe from John is nice.

I noticed you had to break up one of your SPSs due to an alk spike. How high and long was the spike and what did it do to the SPS? Why break it up?

Lighting Config?

Lighting Config?

So, what's too much. You've got 250W DEs. How far from the water line to the bulbs, to the top of the rock work and to the bottom of the tank?

quick response before im back to studying...

Like Doug mentioned, the "zeo-look"... I personally keep my cap lower to keep that pastel colour.

It's all about trial and error....and sometimes a lot of error. ;)

Here is what mine looked like a month ago Brian. I did some moving around and as you can see.....no Vortech on the right hand side. After this weekend, all Seio's will be gone.
