sorry its not photo synthetic, it is a filter feeder, actually needs quite a bit of food as well as a strong current, and low light so algae wont grow on it. I hooked one while fishing one day, took it home and researched it. needless to say it died after quite awhile.
I think there may be more than one type that are called purple sea whip. I have one kind that is photosynthetic and have had it for years. Never fed it anything and it is thriving.
this one has a needle like structure unlike the fat purple gorgs ive seen in the keys,it has shed once and seems to like the cyclopsese i put in but it very rarely has any feeders out.ill try to download a pic this evening.thanks again.
