purple tang: examples of aggression

I'm in the planning stages of a 180g tank and plan on keeping a purple tang as my only tang. I'm worried that over time, it may still become ultra aggressive in my tank and chase everyfish that already resides in the tank.

Let's hear some examples of aggression exhibited under the following situation:
-only tang in the tank, the tank is stable, and there are no other fish have been introduced recently

I had one forever and he was the last fish I added and was great. I know that isnt aggression exhibited but they are not barracuda or anthing, they will get along, for the most part, if you use good stocking such as adding him last and avoiding other Zebrasoma tangs.

These a re not hard and fast rules as you know, but the worst I would expect in the scenario you describe would be what I call "flashy" swimming. PT's, Hippo's and YT's will occasionally (especially during feeding) try to intimidate other fish by swimming very fast in front of them. No nipping or anything, just speed and proximity to get their attention.

I once had 3 Tangs in my tank. A Purple, a Yellow, and a Naso. The purple was the last I added, and the smallest one of all. after a few months I did see the yellow and purple tangs fighting at times with there spike on there tails. None of them messed with the Naso tang probable due to it's size (9").

My purple is nice, I have intrduced fish to the tank and he leaves them alone, the purple is 7 years old. My other tangs and angel are the mean ones

I have a purple and yellow and they got along fine for over a year, then we moved and after getting the tank back up the purple is killing the yellow, and no I cant get the yellow out.....my fault for thinking I could pull it off.

great info. everyone!!! This is the great thing about reefing. Always different examples involving the same fish.

It's good to know about the "flashy" swimming that alan214 pointed out. I think by far, my PT will be my most aggressive fish. I'm hoping to put in a yasha goby/shrimp pair and a cleaner goby. I may have to target feed them considering how aggressive the PT might get.
