How long can my purple tang be in a spaghetti container? he's afloat right now in the main display, should i put him in the sump? I don't wanna kill the poor fella but i want my new addition to get used the tank. he's been acting real aggressive, he'll go up to the new guy and bite his fins!

They are pretty passive angels, and difficult to get eating prepared foods. I would give it at least a couple of weeks before the purple is reintroduced.

he'll probably be aggressive regardless what you do. he has already established his territory. if your getting good flow is the container he can probably survive awhile.

If he is getting food in there, he can be in there quite a while. I'm sure he doesnt like it but it isnt hurting him.

I left an aggressive powder blue in a floating spaghetti colander for around 2 weeks with no ill effects, if anything he got fatter because he couldnt swim all over the place, it was like I plunked him down on a recliner and said dont move for two weeks :)

thanks, two weeks it is. Might as well add fish right now since the suckers in jail. I could never add any new fish because of him.

How big is the purple and how long have you had it in your display tank? It will survive in the container, but it likely won't be happy and will be stressed so it might develop ich. I would use the sump if it has more swimming room. You should rearrange the display tank rockwork before reintroducing the purple.

I had a powder blue tang terrorize my 2 fowleri tangs so I put him in the sump for 6 months and added him back in the dt and he doesnt even look at them twice, I never thought the time out stuff would work but I guess it did has been 3 months and no aggression

I've always been told to change the aquascape turn off the lights and put both fish in. They both need to establish territories...

If you dont have a spot for the more aggressive fish, this isnt a bad idea.

But its an even better idea to put the "wimpier" fish into the tank first, let it get it's bearings and established, then put the more aggressive fish in. This puts them on much more even footing.

Picture being dropped into a container with lots of hiding spaces at the same time a hungry lion is dropped in. Your chances of survival are a lot worse if you have no clue where the hiding spots are. But if you had been plopped down in there for a couple days and scoped the place out, gotten comfortable, then a lion was thrown into the mix, you could hide when you needed to and keep surviving.

Obviously it's not the same situation but the thought is the same.

Great analogy -- really have to consider the 2 fishes being added, a Golden dwarf angel is difficult to get feeding and fairly reclusive, so giving it time to settle in before the purple tang is re-added, is, IMO/E the best choice.

Here would be the perfect other use for a quarantine tank. Since this is something we should all have, why not get one set up now and keep your tang in it for his time out?
