Purple Tang

I am looking at a Purple Tang at an LFS. Does anyone have any advice on keeping one?? I have a 180 gallon mixed reef with no other sailfin style tangs. I have heard that Purple Tangs are very aggressive and I just wanted some other opinions. Also, is $99.99 a good price for one that is about 3"??

Thats actually a pretty good price IMO! They are hardy tangs but aggressive. I just wouldnt put more tangs with it either. just make sure you feed atleast 3 times a day they are grazers that pick at the rock all day. They benefit from a sheet of nori on a clip every day.

can be aggressive, can be a wimp or anywhere in between depending on his particular temperament and/ or tank mates/tank size ect, i just combined 2 tanks (temporary for home remodel) and have had no problem with my purple and aggression even against other tangs with one being a yellow..not saying it will last either)

100 bucks is a good price i think LA DD has a 4 3/4 inch for 249.99(they did yesterday at least)

Very hardy fish once acclimated, but can be aggressive. Since you're adding it to an established tank with no pre-existing tangs, I don't think the purple will display aggression immediately. However, the aggression might be towards the new tankmate (pt) though if you have any aggressive marine fish present. But as the purple tang feels more comfortable, it would be difficult to add other fish, especially tangs afterwards. Should hop on it as it is a decent price.

I have 5 tangs in my 260g mix reef. With the only one "he's" having problems is with the scopas tang, but I think the scopas is the one trying to bully, even though the scopas is half the size from the purple tang.

My purple tang is definitely my favorite fish at the moment.

in terms of tangs, I had an achillies, kole, chevron, yellow, purple, blue, and sailfin together in my 350. The yellow was right in the middle in terms of size but he is the most aggressive. Purple guy has a nice even personality. $100 is a great price.

$100 is a good price and it should be a nice addition to your tank.

What other tankmates do you have and, more importantly, what else do you plan on adding? I doubt you will have a problem with existing tank inhabitants assuming there are no similar tangs, but I think your biggest risk is having a problem with adding any other fish after the purple tang. It may or may not bother later fish.

$100 is a good price

Not hard to keep, just get a nori clip (recommend the two little fishies magnetic one)

Better if it's the last fish you add, or you might have trouble with additions later on.
