Purple Tilefish Sob Story!

So this post is just to rant. I bought a beautiful Purple Tilefish two months ago. This fish would not eat at the LFS and I took him for a GREAT deal.

After about a week I had him eating ghost shrimp and live brine. A couple weeks later I had him eating frozen mysis and frozen brine. Over the last couple weeks he started eating pellets!

Well yesterday afternoon he burrowed (which is normal) and I didn't see him when the tank lights dimmed down. He normally comes out around that time to eat. And then ALL DAY today he hasn't been seen. I even shined a flashlight in his normal hiding spots to see if I could find him, and checked surrounding floor areas in case he jumped. No luck.

I think he's gone forever. Which sucks, he was beginning to be my favorite fish in the tank.

I have a couple of tilefish. At first only one, she would stay out most of the time then within a week or two rarely come out. I think she was lonely. I bought another one, now they are out as long as the lights are on. I hear that purple ones dont like other tiles but I dont have any experience with them specifically, only blue jaw and red striped.

oh goodness, I'm so glad he's not dead! Better keep a close eye on that baby and make sure your tank is covered with the BRS 1/4 inch netting.

I have a yellow spot tile fish, he is the reason I got into the hobby, I had him taken out the local LFS display and bought the whole system from them. I love him, the king of the tank as I call him :)
I have tried so many other tiles probably spent close to 1500$ on purples and skunk and a full yellow body tile fish which looks like the yellow spot but instead off having the spots, TS full yellow body. I can never keep them, they come in fine, eating and all and then after about 3 weeks just die, I have tried various LFS and online stores, they just don't ship well. So keep on doing what you are, I am soo afraid that when and if my yellow spot tile dies either off old age or another reason, I won't be able to find another one, I have never seen one. Any where. Online or anything, if you guys get a chance look it up on YouTube or google.

I have also tried with a few different types of tilefish and have never been able to keep one for over a month.
Good luck with yours, I have never tried the purple so I might give it a shot.

I know exactly what you mean! I have a pair of yellow tilefish, and they are very dear to me! Every time they take too long to come out, I get worried, and when they finally do, it is pleasing to the eye!:twitch:
