purple tip anenome

What kind of purple tip do you have, there's a few with purple tips.

How long have you had it?
Which tank is it in?
Is it attached?
What condition is it in?

Sometimes if it's new, it may not eat right away. Most people here recommend waiting until a nem is attached before feeding it. Another reason they might not eat is because they're stressed, this can be from unstable tank conditions, adding it to a new tank, improper lighting, etc...

Some nems are picky eaters and wait for that one special food to come along before they eat, others aren't quite as picky. It varies even within a species. Sometimes you have to try a little bit of everything before you find the thing it likes. Ours seems partial to scallops, but will eat silversides very easily too. You can try shrimp, clam, scallop, mussell, meaty things like that from the seafood counter at your grocery store. There's also meaty foods at your LFS like silversides. I've heard people feed krill too, but I'm not familiar enough with it to know where to find it. Usually just putting the food near the mouth is good enough. Ours loves eating and is settled in enough that we just make sure it gets on the disk, he gets it to his mouth just fine now.

Another really good resource for anemone information is the FAQ sticky at the top of the forum. Great info on a variety of nems.
Good luck!

ok so it is a bubble tip if that helps, it is in the 75 with sufficent lighting, it is attached, i have had it for about a week.

is a nem another name for an anenome?

i have also been only trying krill and will try silversides tonight

Yes, nem is just a quicker way to say anemone. You'll also see anem, but I guess I'm lazy and just use one syllable :)

I mentioned lighting not only for type but for age. Our nem starts doing strange things when our lights begin going bad.

If you've only had this nem for a week, it could just be settling in still. Did you get it from a fellow reefer or from a store? If it was eating before you got it, maybe you could find out what it was eating there and start with that.

A good site for bubble tips is http://www.karensroseanemones.com/

Besides purple tips, is there another color? If it's white, then it's most likely bleached and will definately benefit from regular feedings.

Just a caution, it's possible that you have a purple tipped bubble tip, but another reefer on here thought the same thing, and when he posted a picture of it to make sure, unfortunately it was a condy. If you're interested in a positive ID, you can post an ID thread, or even post the pic in this thread. It's also possible to confuse bleached and starving H. crispa's with BTAs because their tentacles look like bulbs with purple tips. I'm only mentioning these things because I find it helpful to know exactly (or as close as possible) what I have so I have the best chance of taking care of it.

Good luck!

Unfortunately it seems that LFS's have a tendency to have anemone's mislabeled, either through their own lack of knowledge or by a botched identification that's just handed down from collectors to wholesalers to the LFS. If you look at a lot of threads here, people get a wide variety nems labelled as something else.

I'm not trying to insult your LFS or the owner...sorry if it read that way. I'm just saying that even the most reputable sources get it wrong sometimes.

There are a few people who have bought purple-tipped BTAs and posted pictures up here to find out that they wound up with a Condy. If you have clowns, it might not be an awful idea to post a pic of the nem in question just to get some other opinions. I say this because Condy's have been reported to allow a clown to host them for a while, only to eventually eat the clowns as they sleep.

That's exactly what I was thinking, but you said it better.

Not to mention, we don't get a lot of purple tipped bta pics here and it's not fair for you to not give us a peek ;)
