Purple Up ???what Happens??

I decided to get some purple up for my 210 trying to thrive the coraline algae growth...it says to add I cap full for each 50 gallons
well thats goodness I didnt I added only 2 and my water turned so cloudy for about 3 hours! what is this stuff? looks to be just a calcium additive? why does it do this to the water for so long?

I've never heard of it. What does it say on the ingredients label?

Its a calcium additive as well as a couple of other trace elements, meant to boost the growth of your coralline. I've used it, and it does turn your water cloudy but I never had it that way for more than 30 minutes or so. Seems like a long time to me.

how much flow do you have?

I use it and it does works. Nothing really to worry about other then the way it looks when put into the tank. Just watch your cal numbers.

I believe it's a Calcium Chloride based mixture with a bumped amount of Strontium and Magnesium. Since your tank turned like that after just a capful, I would be checking your pH, Calcium, Alkalinity, and Magnesium to make sure that they are balanced. This could be an indicator that something is ionically wrong with your water.....or it could be nothing at all

ok good....just never had anything turn that cloudy...

my flow is 4 seio 2500 gph
1 1800 gph return pump
1 850 gph pump to refugium
1-850 gph chiller pump
and 2 maxi 1200 pumps in the refuge

so I have the flow covered I hope.....working on a wave maker...

I've used it for years and several tanks and never had a problem. Clouding the water is normal. Let it circulate and the water will clear. It's a thicker suspension that has to attach / settle on the surfaces.

we monitor our tank probably closer than anyone...

we have a digital ph & salinity monitor and 2 digital tem monitors

we teat 2 times a day keep in mind the tank is pretty new 6 months or so...


here are my tank reading they stay pretty close..

ph 8.15-8.20

calc 420-430

mag 1200? need to be a little higher!!!

alk 11.2-11.5

nitrates 0

nitrites 0

ammonia 0

salinity 35.4

going to start testing iodine!


water temp ranges day-80.5- night 78.5 now with the chiller

it use to be 81.8 day -night 80.5

it just clouds up alot I added it directly into my sump...only 2 capfulls...

how often do you use it? and for how many months? do you dose anything?

IVe used Purple up alot of times and it does say in the back it might make the water cloudy if you dont put it slow in the way of a power head or a return pump.

I dose every 2 weeks as a maintenance measure. I try to keep my calcium around 400 - 420 ppm. I get several color variations in my coralline which makes for great aesthetics. I use it in startup tanks for the first 2 to 3 months as recommended or until I like the resulting coralline coverage.

do you dose what on the cover....I couldnt imagine me adding 4-5 caps you wouldnt see the fish...lol

About the only way you wont notice a change in water color is to drip it in the sump or in front of the PH for several hours. I've never had a tank not cloud using Purple Up. Also, make sure you squeeze the bottle at the bottom to make sure you do not have settling of the calcium. If the bottom feels hard you may need to shake it vigorously for quite a while to get it to loosen and disolve.

Its not Calcium Chloride. Its pulverized aragonite in a liquid form buffered with Sr and Mg and I. I have alot of customers that like it. Seems to work fine when first starting out but as soon as your tank demands increase your better off with a 2 part
