Other than being pretty timid, they need to be with peaceful tank mates, none that I know of.
Gentle tank mates, a place to "call home", feeding from the water column (nutramar ova, cyclopeeze, frozen foods)

Timid, peaceful (unless perhaps it's another firefish), jumpers, feed from the water column etc. I'd say a 20g minimum tank size, and I'd avoid housing them with fish like dottybacks (orchids, Sankey's, and springeri may be okay though), basslets (unless the tank is at least 55g), and sixline wrasses :fish1:

They also need a covered top as they are prolific jumpers.

I had two in series, both went carpet surfing. I either had to give up on them or cover the tank top. I gave up on them.

I have a "regular" firefish and he spends most of the time near his bolthole, but is not shy. Always the last to emerge from his bolthole, and first to retire at night, but he's out and about most of the day. Peaceful tankmates are the key. I've never seen him attempt to jump, but I have 0.25" mesh screening over the top of my tank. He's surprisingly one of the least skittish fish in my tank, but it's probably because the rest of the fish don't really pay attention to him. Only significant interaction he gets from the other fish is my Blue Flasher flashing at him from time to time.

My purple firefish is out all day, never hides, because he isn't housed with any bullies.
People need to pay way more attention to how they choose tankmates and jumpers of any species would be way less common.
