Purplish Maricultured ID?

Got this beauty this weekend (at least I think he's nice...especially for $10). Flesh coloration is odd - purplish-gray with grayish polyps. Any ideas? Sorry for the photo quality. :(

I'm thinking that your coral could be an Acropora horrida.

Does it get good day time polyp extension?

It looks like you moved this coral shortly before photographing it. Was that the case? If so, try to let it stabilize where you plan to photograph it (leaving flow on until you are ready to shoot) That way we can see it's polyps extended. Upping shutter speed may help you with a sharper image. It looks like you are shooting freehand.. Keep things as stable as possible. Use your elbows as a tripod.

Regardless of the true identity of your coral, its safe to say that you got a killer deal.
On a side note.. I would keep it in high light and flow (especially good flow if you agree that it is A. horrida.)

Definitely a great looking acro.

Ok, now that someone has said it, I can say I was originally thinking A. horrida, but I'm usually terrible with species names. Regardless, it was a good deal and a beautiful Acro. I haven't been able to find a good photo of A. austera that looks like it yet. But, at the same time, my coral doesn't look like a lot of the horridas I've seen with the long smooth stalks and random polyps except at the tips.

Yeah, my photography skills (and camera) are lacking (I have an old point-and-shoot that has a lens that is starting to bubble...delaminating?) Thanks for the pointers...maybe one of these days I'll upgrade cameras and take a few classes. Anyway, I bumped the coral purposely since it's normally quite hairy and figured that wouldn't help with an ID. But yes, its polyps are out a LOT during the day.

Thanks to both of you!
