you need to use the one that is labeled for potable water. I always recomend using a solvent type cement, which welds the pipe, weldon makes some good ones and so does christy's
I also used the Christy's referenced above on my PVC joints without primer. Horrible chemical smell, but everything turned out fine without any problems.

No primer needed. I sometimes clean the pieces with acetone prior to gluing to remove labeling and such.
I've used it for years, no leaks.
I can promise you, if you do not use primer while plumbing your house, you'll have a pool in your basement, sometime. At aquarium pressure, not likely needed. Not a chance I'm willing to take as primer is cheap and easy.
If you use the glues i mentioned, there is no need to worry about primer, the glue itself softens and welds the pipe together. If your using something like oatly glue that should use the primer because it is not near as strong.
