PVC light stand

Hello all,

Does anyone know what type of PVC to use on a DIY "portable" light stand. I'm assuming 1" or so due to the weight of my fixture (15 lbs or so). I've seen them used at the BA Farmers market and would like to make one to hang a Outer Orbit 24" MH/PC combo.

Unfortunately I do not have Search abilities on RC and having probs locating directions. If you have a link to some threads or webbies, I would be grateful. Or if you know what proper size and pieces I may need to accomplish the stand that would be great also.

Since I plan to move in the near future I don't want to ceiling mount my fixture.

Thanks!

If you want you can use electrical conduit as well... If you are a little handy with a tubing bender you can make some nice pieces with the conduit and some couplings...

Todd's stand in the pic looks like its made out of 2" abs.. Looks like
12- T's
4- 90 degree Ell's

Bunch of pipe..

Super easy to glue together.. 1" might not be strong enough for your light if it is indeed 15lbs.. the larger idameter of the 2" will give you a lot more rigidity..

2" abs it is. Also looks like it comes in black stock which will save me some paint $. I'm heading out to pick up the pieces 2morrow. Probably gonna make it all the way down to the floor instead of inside the tank itself.

Thanks again!

2" would be really big IMO. I use 3/4" and it's pretty strong. The tank was only 24"L though and the pendant is much lighter but I think it can handle 10-15lbs no problem. I'm sure 1" would be good enough. If you want to make it strong maybe use 1" SCH 80 ..

Here is a pic of it.. :D .. damn ugly if you ask me

I'm not sure but I think with the heat from the halides it would soften up quite a bit
The larger diameter stuff is much more rigid than smaller diameter thicker walled ie sch80

Good Luck..

Abs used to be way cheaper than pvc but it si starting to catch up in price...
