What should I use to join PVC pipes and tubing? Would the PVC cement that is sold at Home Depo be safe for the aquarium?

The normal pvc cement (usually Oatey brand) is totally fine for your tank. Just make sure you let it completely dry and cure before putting it under any pressure.

Make sure you also use the primer. Primer and cement used together and make sure you swab it both on both pieces that you're joining. The Primer softens the material and helps both pieces to accept the cement and weld together. It will dry quickly and be safe to use within 20 minutes.

If you can find a specialty plumbing or sprinkler supply store they have clear primer, instead of the purple. I looks better without the purple stain from most primers.

definitely go with the clear primer if you can find it. You can use the purple primer and not have it show up outside the joint, but you have to be VERY careful. Much easier to use clear and not worry.

I used cement and the adjustable clamps. It may be overkill, but I would rather be safe than sorry.
