pvc stands for lps?

im trying to figure out why pple are using pvc pipe to hold up lps. my friend who wholesales alot of lps says it keeps them healthy and from getting brown jelly rot. says that being on the sand can contribute to that. anyone heard anything similar??????

Do you mean retail or in people's tanks? Usually retailers and wholesalers do it for the reason your friend said, so that they get good flow and don't get infections. I haven't seen them used in tanks, would probably look a bit ugly, plus healthy LPS do fine on the sandbed

he does have them in his tank. he paints them black, but he swears by them. ive had a couple 200.00 welso's get brown jelly from sitting on the sandbed. he says he hasnt lost anything yet doing it this way

I've never heard of wellsos getting brown jelly just from being on the sandbed, I think that's pretty much their natural habitat. Are you sure you don't have more of a crushed coral type sand bed?

NO, pvc stands for polyvinylchloride.

I used PVC slip sections to hold some LPS, jammed them down into the sandbed. They didn't work out very well, the sand would shift around and show the ugly stand or the snails and crabs would tip it over. I just use frag glue to attach to a rock and bury that in the sand now.

You can but it is not needed. I have had brains for a few years on the sand and never had a problem. Its all personal preference.

hmmm everytime ive had them they get brown jelly infections and die. my friend told me has yet to have a death by sticking them on stands. he has some that are valued at over 350.00

I use PVC stands all the time. Especially with newly introduced corals. LPS corals are often damaged around the edges and bottom during shipping. Placing a damaged coral in the sand simply invites infection. Once the coral is well established, and any wounds have had time to heal, Sand isn't that big a deal. I still use PVC, wedged into rock work, to support some LPS. The pipe can be hidden by rocks, and the corals expansion. I have my new elegance on a 4" PVC pipe.
