you can remove in a bucket/pale/bowl of tank water and work on it submerged. You may be able to work in that it never leaves the water :)

By the way, you will need to repeat this procedure. The snails live in the sand and come out at night (IIRC). So do this after lights out, to catch them on your clam. You'll need to keep doing it until they are all gone.

They're out now, I don't have to wait until the lights go out. It's not attached to the rock, just a clam cradle ;)
