Pyramidelline snails

Have just discovered pyramidelline snails attacking my derasa clam.

Have removed the clam, but wonder if these snails are dangerous to my corals?

Am weighing the option of putting an unquarantined six-line wrasse in my main aqaurium to deal with any remaining snails vs. putting the wrasse in a quarantine tank with the clam.

Thanks!

Snails on clam

Hi Tina,
Sorry to hear you've got snails on your clam, they are a real pest!!

I had these on a few of my clams, they must have come in on a new one!! I tried the sixline wrasse and it didn't seem to eradicate them, just keep them in check... they lay their eggs around the byssal opening which probably makes it impossible for the wrasse to get at them...

I got fed up with them and took some 'drastic' action which worked fine.
I picked the clams out into a shallow container, scubbed them clean with a toothbrush making sure I got in all the scutes. Then (the clams had shut tight) I used a pipette to squirt dilute lugols iodine over the shells being careful not to get it on any flesh parts. They then went into a freshwater dip and I swilled them around to get rid of any iodine residue...

That was quite a few months ago, I didn't lose any clams doing this and I eradicated all the snails, but please be very careful if you choose to try this!!

PS. if you do want to try a wrasse, Daniel Knop recommends a juvenile Coris Gaimard over a sixline... but you have to get rid of it when it reaches maturity as it might munch on your corals... plus it probably won't get rid of the eggs so it will just be an ongoing situation...
