I would go for a 40 if you are looking to buy a new one. IMO a 10 wouldn't produce very much flow in a 90 but it might be good for creating flow along the deadspots on the sandbed.

If you already own one I would say it add something else to it, but to buy a MP40 for a fish only setup seems to be over kill. The random flow is mainly for SPS coral, where you need super high & random flow for growth stimulation & feeding. For fish only you can setup any kind of wave maker or alternating power heads to give the surge effect that fish like to play in, and it will help with dead spots.
Again, I am not sure if you already own a MP10, and looking to add to it. Or just looking at buying a MP10, but you could save yourself a lot of money at just looking at some of the New Hydor Koralia powerheads, hooked up to any kind of basic wave maker. Then spend your extra money to upgrade your skimmer, or extra LR. That will really add benefit to your system.

Benefit of an mp-40 is you can add the battery backup easily. That is why I have one on my FOWLR.

$75 for my battery backed up power strip that will keep my power heads & return pump going for 6 hours.
Either way, if you got the funds to spend & want the best power head on the market. Go MP40. It truly is amazing with it's super wide flow & options. Howerever, I personally don't believe you are truly getting the value out a MP40 with a fish only tank.

some people dont mind 500 for a powerhead setup. some fish cost that much or more, but at least with the powerhead, you know you will have it for a good long while.

Not even close. I have an MP-10 in my nano and wish I would have gotten an MP-40 just because I don't think it is enough.

My choice would be tunze instead. WAY quieter, less expensive, and you dont need the random flow for a fowlr

For what it's worth I've owned both and I also prefer Tunze.
