Q's about Freshwater dips

Just a couple of questions about Freshwater dipping...
1) How long do you keep the fish in the freshwater?
2) Is it best to try and get the Ph the same by using some type of buffer?
3) Do you do this before the quarantine tank and/or before you place into the DT?
