QT essentials

I'm putting together equipment so I can start a QT again. I (will) have a 20 gal, heater, HOB filter, cheap led light, and was wondering if I need a skimmer. What else would be essential?

Nah you don't need a skimmer. A small UV sterilizer can be useful but not needed. Other than that a thermometer and one of those ammonia alert badges is a good idea along with a net top to keep jumpers in.

No skimmer.
cupramine and prazipro (don't use UV while medicating, it will kill your fish).
Extra HOB filters to stick in your sump, this will instantly cycle your qt but you still need to watch water parameters.

Good points Ed. I added the UV cause I couldn't keep my water clear and it has done wonders but yeah, shut it off when using meds.

I would avoid the cupramine unless your fish really needs it... Copper is a smaller particle and yes it helps combat disease but harms the fish as much as it helps... you wouldn't like to be breathing copper in your lungs all day 24/7 if you didn't need it. Just a thought tho...

My QT would always turn to pea soup, looked just like phyto. I would do 100% water changes and in two days it would be green again. It drove me crazy not being able to see the fish I was supposed to be quarantining. Finally I added the cheap little 9watt all in one UV and its been clear ever since.

whats the footprint size of it? I wanna see if it will fit in my last chamber with my return pump... which is 5" wide with a water height of 7" but my Tunze nano ATO is going in there too

found this info on petsmarts website

Assembled unit measures 7 1/2"L x 1 7/8"W x 4"D.

Does the entire unit have to be submersed fully or can the powerhead only be submersed?

i guess i can remove the outlet elbow and make it even shorter.... LOL I hi jacked this thread.... sorry!

I disagree... I personally proactively treat all my fish with both cupramine and prazi. IMO that is the only sure way to keep disease out of your tank. There are other treatments as well but IME all but the most delicate fish can easily take a full dose of cupramine over 4 weeks if they are healthy and eating going into the treatment. With that said if you are keeping a reef you should also qt your corals which is not always practical so if I kept a reef and wasn't going to keep a dedicated coral qt then I'd be a little more relaxed with my qt procedure knowing that I could bring in a hitchhiker at any time.

Right now I keep a FOWLR and they don't go into my tank unless they have been medicated, no exceptions. It is just not worth the risk and it is amazing to own completely healthy fish that don't scratch or flash. At this very moment I have no snails or crabs in my DT, I have 2 x 5 gallon buckets with some that will go in if they make it 3 months fallow with no meds. I'm paranoid but I NEVER want to battle disease in my DT again if at all possible.

I think it is something in the Tucson water. My DT was cloudy and a 25 watt UV cleared up my water really nicely was well.

Ok, so adding Cupramine and Prazi to my grocery list and maybe that UV sterilizer. I'm waiting for Petco's dollar a gallon sale to pick up a 20 tall.

I ramp up curpramine over 4-7 days instead of the recomendation on the bottle. It helps some of the more delicate fish adapt a little easier. If you are keeping hardy fish then the normal instructions are perfectly fine.
