QT - new newbie question

Hi all,

One more newbie question ... ehehe

How important is to QT the first fish that are you going to introduce in the tank.

I am asking this because I am strugling paying my set up and now I read that you need to QT all fishes before introduce to the tank...

I don't have money for another tank ... ahahaha

Thanks in advance !!!

While its not recommended obviously some of us are not as fortunate to have multiple tanks. In the past I didn't have a QT and i was just very careful acclimating my fish as to minimize shock in the transfer process. Never had a problem taking my time acclimating....maybe it was just luck but i would like to think it wasn't the case.

I will just say this, IMO if you do not QT then it is just a matter of time before you get an illness into your tank. If your lucky it will just be ich. Good luck

QT from day one will save you eventual heartbreak.
WHEN, not IF, you add a sick fish directly to your DT, you will find out.
Like most newbies, I did not quarantine. I read about it, but of course it did not apply to me.
That worked fine until I added 2 clowns with Brooklynella. Lost 4 fish in 24 hours.
6 Months later, I added a tang to a different tank that already had about $600 of healthy fish in it. Of course it had ich.
While not everything died, it did teach me that I was playing Russian Roulette with my pets lives.
The more livestock you have, the more important QT becomes.
So go to Petco's $1-a-gallon sale and buy 2 10 gallon tanks and 2 HOB filters.
Unless you do not have 4 square feet of floor space anywhere in your home, you can at least set up to do TTM.

This hobby is very expensive. If you think you're struggling paying your set up now you'll really be struggling worrying about if you get a fish with a sickness. Because then you'll be not just struggling paying you'll be discouraged and frustrated. QT'ng is one of the most important if not the most important thing to do. Just my $.02

oh... i see...
is it that commom to buy a fish with a disease ?
i thought it was just a matter to find a reliable LFS... and i will never have to worry about it...

Here in the States it is more common than I like. There are a few of your mates from Sydney that post on RC maybe one of them can help with the better LFS in your area, look in your area for a local club it would surprise me if there was not one. I would however still advise doing a QT on your fishes.

ok... thanks for the help... i will see what i can do about it.
those QT tank have the same needs as a proper tank? for example, i will need the same filter requirements( protein skimmer, reactors, etc ) ?

Not QTing your animals is like heating up a pizza in the oven in the box.

It may work once, twice or fifty times, but one day you'll catch the kitchen on fire.

No, basically need the tank, HOB filter, heater, small power head and or air bubbler, some PVC fittings for the fish to hide and a cheap light. There are some stickies about Qt at the top of this forum.

YOur qt tank should be a bare glass box, no light, no skimmer, just s strong pump, a heater and a filter you can change often and a pvc joint to hide in. And anti-jump screen.
