Went to the LFS today to pick up the white tail bristletooth tang they ordered for me. Got there they had 3 of them one was in their show tank other two were split amongst the frag tanks. I asked to see them eat. One in the show tank is not for sale, between the other two one ate the other one didn't. I observed the one that was eating it looked great not skittish, very active and pecking for algae looked like it might have scratched himself on the eggcrate. We negotiated a price for it and the same cherub angel that I had been eyeing for months.
I then told them I had a 20g long and asked them what they felt the quarantine process should be like? They said they wouldn't QT either of them. My rebuttal was but the tang is very susceptible to ich and I don't want to risk introducing it to my DT. They defended with "we've had this cherub for months (they really have) but I could QT him in a 20g long if I wanted and this tang looks so good putting him in a 20L is too small and would only stress him out and probably give him ich." So, we got the cherub bagged he looks great! We net the tang and put him in a container waiting to be bagged. I could see the tang stressing laying at the bottom of the container hardly moving and heavily breathing. Nothing to concerning its pretty common for fish to stress after being chased and netted. I got in for a closer look...I said is that a spot on him?! Look at his fun it looks like ich...we put him in good light...we both got close and stared for a while. His fins have rough marks as if he has been fighting and it looks like he's had a tough week. We glare at the sides ICH! For sure! A few big spots we look closer no it's not a few it's all over. The rough spots on his fins are also ich. I didn't take him home.
We agreed they would hold the fish in his tank for about a week or until it was asymptomatic. So, I took the cherub home and said to myself if that tang has ich then this cherub was connected to the same system and could be carrying it even if he is asymptomatic. I dropped the cherub in the QT he's having a gay ole time. Going to stop by the LFS and check on the tang every few days before I take it home.
So...this is my scenario...
I only have one QT, I don't want to bring a fish that is/was sick (tang) home and introduce it to a fish that is not sick (cherub).
A) Keep the cherub in QT for 30 days then pick the tang up and QT the tang for 30days?
B) Setup another QT, pick up the tang when it's asymptomatic and QT them separately?
C) A and B do not matter, when the tang is asymptomatic bring it home and QT it with the cherub for 30 days?
Second part is do I treat both fish for Ich even if they are asymptomatic or do I wait for physical symptoms to show before treating?
Questions, comments and concerns will all be much appreciated please?
