QT question, something i'm not getting (Ammonia)

Hello,

I've got 2 QT's setup and i just finished qt'ing one of my fish. During my experience though, i came across some things that I do not understand.

MY QT is a 10 gallon, heater, PVC, Aquaclear 20 and an ammonia badge

The Aquaclear chamber only has a seeded sponge from my DT.

I decided to do a QT with Prazi, metro & CP before my fish go into my DT.

So I first started with API General cure (Prazi & Metro).
Once complete, I did a water change and added carbon for a day or two.

Then I removed the carbon & went to CP.

That's when I started noticing the ammonia badge changing color. Now i'm in the process of changing my water every 3-4 days to avoid ammonia spikes.

Why isn't the seeded sponge keeping ammonia at bay?

A follow up question is, can I get the aquaclear ammonia remover insert and use it with the sponge during treatment?

CP - chloroquine phosphate?

Very possible that the biofilter was disrupted. Have you checked your NH4 with a regular test kit? It's also possible that one of the drugs is making the badge inaccurate.

Yes for CP.

I tested NH4, it seems to say 0. then again it's a salifert test kit and the cloudiness of the water always makes me question my results.

I have Prime from Seachem, if I add that every other day will it disrupt the CP and Metro/Prazi in any way?

Prime will make most ammonia tests inaccurate. The stick-on ammonia badges work well, though. I don't know how the Prime will affect the meds. I don't like the idea of using metro/praziquantrel together. I know the makers of Prazi-Pro say that using CP or copper with the praziquantrel (PP) makes the PP less effective.

Thanks, I'll keep doing the water changes. In a 10 gallon at is every 4 days efficient?

Metro and prazi are part of the api general cure. It has a combo of both. When that treatment is done I then do a water change, carbon for a Couple of days and finally start CP.
