QT Set-Up Equipment

I am working through my QT set-up.

I have two 10 gallon tanks for the TTM then I will monitor in a 20 gallon QT. The 20 gallon QT will have a light similar to my tank light and will be where I observe corals and inverts.

What equipment and where did you buy from for these (i.e. heaters, air stones, sponge filters)? Everyone seems to do QT a little different so I am trying to take it all in and reading a lot of varying opinions.

I got my heaters from Amazon (two of them for my 10 gallons for TTM)

And then I got this very basic, small air pump for those two tanks. It came with a valve to regulate air flow so I just grabbed a T so when both tanks are running (right before the flip) I can have the air running to both without needing another pump. I have plenty of air into both and then have to use the valve once it is only running into one. I would suspect because of this you would be plenty fine with it in a 20 gallon once the fish move to that one even.

I just grabbed 25 ft of the airline then so that I was able to have a length dedicated to each tank. I then used a few things laying around for the end that were plastic rather than the store type stones that would need thrown out (one was the cap to one of the pipettes I bought).

I grabbed a kit for the 10 gallon so it came with a HOB that I only use as a way to help keep water moving until they are in the tank for more than the short periods then add floss and a little carbon. I use a media bag from Petsart that was like 99 cents each to put carbon in and then use a quilt batting for floss (also purchased on Amazon). then once they are in the longer hold.

I don't have a lot of options in terms of local choice so Amazon always beats out buying local for me. I didn't want to spend a ton on the tanks for TTM considering some will even only use a bucket. I don't even have my tanks covered on the sides because I have them in a room where there is little traffic and I can keep it somewhat dark.

Why do the airstones need to be thrown out after use? You can buy 10 for cheap online but couldn't they be bleached and left dry and used again?

They don't need to be thrown out. Just ensure they are dried out completely.

I would advise against using an air stone /pump. Instead get a small powerhead.

Really the only reason for that is that it's cheaper. One air pump needed.

Thanks that really helps plus I have plenty of powerheads. It just seems wasteful to be throwing out all those airstones even though it is cheap. I mean we re-use rock in the hobby, but not airstones.

As long as anything that touches water is thoroughly dried afterward there is no need to toss anything.

Correct, this is easier with some things and harder with others in 48hrs (you want it to dry for at least 24hrs so that's something to consider when using TTM). I would also suggest formalin dips in between the transfers and a 4th transfer to ensure anything that was missed in previous 3 transfers was eliminated. Obviously TTM only works for ich
