QT setup for yellow head jawfish

I assume i need to provide a disposable deep substrate for this particular critter in QT - agree? Would it be sufficient to fill a large bowl with substrate and some pvc tubes rather than cover an entire 30g with a deep layer?

Not necessary. I provided mine with a flower pot and some PVC. He was quite content and would hover at the flower pot entrance as if it was a burrow. They don't bury themselves at night like some wrasses, they dig out tunnels. Yours would probably just make a mess with any sand you put in there and definitely wouldn't be able to make a burrow for himself in a bowl. Just give him some places to hide and he'll be fine. :)

It might be fine, but why risk it? I would go ahead and put a tupperware container full of sand in just to be safe.

Fishmommy,

QT is to protect your existing display from introduction of disease, however it is really about adapting your new fish to your environment and getting them healthy so they can eat and become strong and survive.

Jawfish need a burrow to feel safe ... so you need to ensure that you have PVC tubes that mimic a burrow.

The best would be a tupperware container with sand and some pvc tubes buried at a angle much like their real homes. The pvc tubes are not full of sand ... they are open so the jawfish can enter. You can even do this with your display to "force" the initial home for them.

If you use a container of sand, make sure your new jawfish can find this. When introducing to the QT use a large glass and put the jawfish in this and then put this upside down over the burrow until the jawfish finds it.

Good luck and enjoy.

Cheer,
Bruce
