Hi
I have just got a QT tank and want some advice. I am doing a water change tomorrow and was going to set it up (got a small internal filter for it), on the 16th I am going on hols for a week, when I return I am due another water change (sunday) and then on monday get some fish. Is this too early to set it up, should I set it up when I return on sunday and then get fish on monday.

you will be fine setting it up now. some people leave theirs setup all the time, and others only set up when needed.

Ok, thanks, I will set it up this weekend then.

It is good that you can use water from your display. Do you have any type of media that you can bring from your DT to the QT, like a sponge filter or something that has been in your DT for a week or two? If not, throw something like that in your DT and add it to the QT in a week. You will be bringing some beneficial nitrification bacteria to the QT, which will help keep ammonia in check. Regardless of whether you do that, IMO the hardest thing about QT is keeping ammonia down. You will probably need to monitor daily and do water changes a couple of times a week.

I am bringing a small net bag of crushed coral that has been in my display tank for a week to 'seed' the internal filter (Fluval 2 plus) I am going to use (I am not going to put the sand in the filter, just drop it in the QT tank).
