i've never used a QT tank for new fish, i've lost a few, made a few bad decisions, but now im upgrading to a 110. I now want to setup a QT tank for the fish that i get. How do i setup one of these? Are they connected to the main tank? If not then whats the difference going from the LFS to my tank? What do i need to setup one of these?(tank size, filtration, lighting, powerhead)?

10 to 20G tank, simple hang on side filter like an AquaClear, a heater, a couple of pieces of PVC pipe or fittings for fish to hide in and maybe a small light, thats it. Do not connect it to the main tank, the idea is to rid the fish of any parasites or sickness so you don't introduce it to the main tank. Keep a filter sponge in your main tanks sump for the QT side filter so you can set it up at a moments notice by draining some water from the main tank to fill the QT, slap the sponge in and go. Always throw the sponge away after each use and never put it back into you sump so you don't pass any medications of bad stuff to the main tank.

It depends on what you are treating the fish for. Different diseases or signs require different treatments. Mostly its for isolation so you can observe their behaviour and look for signs of sickness and then treat accordingly. You can do things like copper treatments and such in the QT instead of wiping out the display tank.
