QT Tank Question

I have a pair of small clowns 3/4 to 1" being delivered tomorrow. I have a bare bones QT set up with fresh RO SW mix, heater, cheap HOB (filter pad and carbon only), thermo and a seachem ammonia alert.

I set this tank up last night and plan to not let it cycle....

Question

Should I use this water to do a quick water change on my display and pull 3 gallons to fill this tank or leave it? Same salt same water source...

tested display last night N03 = 0ppm, PH 8.1, Salinity = 1.025

It's a small 3 gal set up and would be easy enough to do a quick WC...

It won't matter except that the water from you display will have been mixed up for longer period of time. You will be doing almost daily water changes in the QT anyway.

After your DT is set up a while and you're sure its parasite free; used DT water is ideal for a QT, plus the DT gets a WC. A little late now, but put your filter pad in your DT flow, assuming you know its parasite/disease free. The pad may pick up enough bacteria to help with the QT cycle. Keep a pad there and you're always ready to instantly cycle the QT. Be sure to remove the carbon from the pads if you use any meds, you could just remove it anyhow----the carbon in those pads is worthless.

That was my original plan - i'm still fine tuning my wc proceedure. Water temp was 90 :headwalls: so i added it to the empty tank with plenty of time to get right....and give me 24 hrs to adjust temp to 80....thanks for the feedback....

Just for arguments sake...how long has your DT been running??

Also you say your going to use a 3 gallon for a QT??? Thats quite small for 2 clowns. You will need to have plenty of freshly mixed saltwater on hand. I would assume you would be doing water changes once a day at least if not two or more. Keep your ammonia test kit handy, along with some prime to neutralize it also.

+1 3 gallons is quite small and I think it would be tough to maintain proper water parameters in that size tank, especially with 2 fish in it

Not disagreeing its small. Everything is relative...yes there are two 3/4 clowns....and there is a high probability I may increase the size of the qt...not sure what i was thinking.... Fresh sw is mixed and ready

I would attach a pic but i can't break the code.

Display is a 60 day old bc29 but not relevant. NO3 = 0 and my firefish has been happy for 3 weeks... saw NO cycle with 30 lbs of lr and 20 lbs of ls testing every 48 hrs for 3 weeks.

Cant break the code? Do you belong to some secret society of ancient reefing that doesnt allow you to post pictures of your tank? lmao
