QT Tank Question

I have a 10 gallon QT tank with2 small clownfish. I received them 14 days ago, the smaller one is eating like a champ, the larger one seems to be picking at the food, not really eating. I've added Kent garlic to the flake food. Both fish are moving all over the tank and look healthy. I hope the larger one starts eating better.

I have a Magnum 350 with filter sleeve and some coral rubble in the filter. The ammonia & nitrites have been zero until yesterday, I tested and the ammonia was still zero but the nitrites bumped up a bit to .1 I have done weekly 2 gallon water
changes. Tonight I took apart the Magnum 350 and rinsed out the filter sleeve, put the filter back together and I'll wait until tomorrow and retest.

I didn't think I was over feeding but I know the clownfish didn't eat all the food. So I guess I might be over feeding a bit causing the slight nitrite bump up.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Ed......

Seems like you are doing fine, monitoring things and taking action. Nitrites are not much of an issue for fish, your levels would need to get much higher before they became an issue. Ammonia is the killer.

Thanks for the reassurance. Being my first saltwater tank I want to make it a success. Is it unusual for a clownfish to still be very picky eating? I'd planed to treat the QT with PraziPro, this week but I was hoping that both the clownfish were eating well by now.
Should I still treat as a preventive measure or wait another week?
Thanks
Ed

It is unusual for the clown not o be eating after two weeks and is a cause of concern. The PraziPro could make matters worse for her, you might ask the question over in the disease forum, there are some members over there much more knowledgeable than me in that field.

I would get the fish eating first unless they are showing signs of flukes. Have you tried anything other than flake food? Try mysis or NLS pellets.

I've tried mysis shrimp, mysis shrimp with garlic. Same results, smaller one eats, the larger one spits it out.

I just tried to feed them again, same result.

I just tested the water, rinsing the filter pad seemed to have cleared up the .1 of nitrite

Salinity 1.025 w/refractor
Ammonia 0
Nitrites .0
Nitrates 10
Temp 78.5
All using Salifert Test Kits

Better to get new fish eating before medicating. Try brine shrimp - it's 'bacon' for fish. And who doesn't like bacon !

I'll give both a try guys....I'll keep you updated to what happens to him. He's swimming so well, no signs of any issues that I can see.
Thanks
