Ok so my tank is 2 weeks into the cycles and i want to qt a mated pair of (wild) percs. i have a 20 g long waiting for them to qt them in. i need to know and what i need for the qt to be efficient and safe for the fish. thanks guys.

since they are wild caught, they may contain internal worms. you may want to try prazipro to eliminate the worms!

In my 20g QT I use a penguin sponge filter/powerhead (petsmart), a 50w heater, air pump and air stone, and two small pieces of pvc (home depot). That's it, no rock or sand. I have a HOB power filter with carbon just in case but haven't used it yet. I also painted the outside bottom of the tank to make cleaning debris easier. The QT tank is in the darkest and most quiet room of the house.

All right that answered most of my questions that i had, but i need help on how to detect parasites and diesease and how to cure it.

I would definitely use 100% of your tank water for your QT. Also it's good to keep the sponge/filter media in your sump at all times so that you will have that beneficial bacteria when QT is being used. As far as what to look for there are several books focused on fish disease and I'm sure there's got to be a thread here on RC, or if you do see something you are unsure about you can always post pics to get some opinions. Basically you don't want to see any white spots, heavy breathing or ulcers/sores among other things. If you do see anything abnormal identify and treat right away. Good luck with your new fish!!!
