QT Treatment question

Gives Bad Advice.
I'm setting up an emergency QT for incoming fish to watch them and possibly dose if need be. My reading comes across cupramine and Prazi Pro.

If you are dosing proactively, do you do both? Is it necessary to do either or should I just have both on hand in the event that monitoring comes across something?

i don't treat prophyactically with copper, just prazi.

truth be told, i would likely skip copper and use Tank Transfer Method (TTM) if and only if the fish showed signs of ich.

sorry i totally misstated this before. was in a hurry.

what it should say:

i would use Tank Transfer Method (TTM) instead of a prophylactic copper dip. while in TTM, i would prophylactically treat with prazi, since internal parasite are difficult to diagnose.

Copper is toxic. The difference between a treatment and a poison is dosage, narrower for some species than others, so species matters; and dosage varies if you don't have an autotopoff. For both reasons, it's not something to use without due caution and frankly, not something to use unless you have clear reason to use it and with a species that tolerates it well.

Cupramine is a double edged sword. To sensitive fish, it can push them over the edge with fatal results.

But it is effective against ich, brook and velvet.

It is literally a case of picking your poison.

Hi, new here and not sure if this is the right place to ask but here goes... We have a 55 gallon tank now and would like to add a fish or two to it. My husband has done some research on how to quarantine them and after they have been switched out on the so many day per tank to get rid of flukes we wanted to keep them for another 30 days in quarantine before introducing them to our tank. the hubby says we need a bio-media for the 30 day tank. I'd like to get something of that nature for a father's day gift as it is the last thing we need so that he can add a fish of his choice (we bought the tank set up with fish already). So my question is what would be the best bio-media to buy and where? TIA :)

+1

Treat with prazi on the 1st and 3rd transfer to ensure any newly-emerged larvae are killed (if present). Copper is really not a good treatment when there are much more effective methods for preventing ich (like TTM).

Copper is not an effective treatment against brook - formalin dips are the most effective treatment. Copper is marginally effective against velvet, but chloroquine phosphate is the preferred treatment.
