Qt?

QT question. Ok I have all my fish out of my tank and getting them ready for the 180. I plan on keeping them out of the tank for over 30 days.

I also have a Naso and PBT in QT in another tank.

My question is if there are no signs of ICH should I dose copper or not?

My tank wont have any fish in it for over 30 days which is the cycle for ICH so will all the ICH die off?

Thanks for your help, I hope it makes cents.

I use copper on all new fish in QT for years; but is controversial. I think Cupramine copper, properly monitored, is safe, not too tough on fish, and 99.99999% effective. Almost all fish have been treated with copper somewhere along the way. Quinine Sulfate has been getting a lot of talk lately as a parasite treatment, you can search the forum for info. If your tank is fishless for 30+ days (I prefer 6 weeks); it will be ich-free. If you decide to treat with copper, can you post a complete fish list? A few species are quite copper-sensitive, like flame Angels. SeaChem, maker of Cupramine, has excellent tech support and you can call them with questions too.

Quinine has been around for a long time. A very common drug called Greenex (pretty sure this is the name) contained it and malachite green. This product was not anywhere near as affective as copper for ich control. I do not alway rely on copper myself but it will work on a lot of things, especially velvet. I have used copper and nitrofurazone in combination in the past with good results.

One drug I have really come to like when quarantining fish is to treat with praziquantel, aka prazipro. The drug is very safe to use and is very effective against internal parasites.
I have included it to my normal quarantine routine.

Yeah, I use Prazi-pro as well. You're right about the quinine drugs being around since I can remember. I use & like copper too; but when guys like Bob Fenner, et al, start recommending Quinine Sulfate, its worth a look, IMO. Unlike all the new 'reef safe" miracle cures and garlic, which do nothing to control ich & other parasites. A forum member has posted a lot of credible information about Q.S. on this thread:http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1974075. Copper works and I'm not switching. But, because of so many folks afraid of copper, QS seems like an excellent choice. For me-----if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I would say copper (only with Cupramine though) or hypo all new introductions, but others would say no. Its up to you, how strict you want to be on new additions. Keep in mind fish aren't the only things that can introduce parasites.

Also I agree with everyone above that prazipro is a great tool and should be used also. FWIW, you can treat prazipro and cupramine at the same time to cut down on QT time.
