Quantum Meter

Give me some idea what the sensor look's like (along with dimensions), and I'm sure the McGyver in me can come up with some sort of adjustable mount so all readings are the same distance from the bulb.

Here's a rough sketch;).

Rick, it might also be good to have it change heights to get an idea for where certain corals like to be placed, etc., or to know how the light drops through the water column. This adds the third dimension, though. Holding it steady and not blocking light are the two needs.

I can talk you through that one, Wayne. The real money is beneath the homeless shelter. Go around back and knock thrice on the plywood door at the top and once at the bottom and it should open up for you. The vaults are in the second door on the right, but the money trees are right inside the door. Would have sketched that up for you, but the 'landscaping' around the homeless shelter had me scratching my head;).

Gary:

Is the mounting hole threaded, if so what is the thread pitch, so I can get a plastic mounting bolt. Just wondering.

Assuming most tanks have a hood that opens up at the top, depth control would not be an issue, but it would be more complicated with tops that open in the front, though even that could be done.

Would making this move me to the front of the class? :)

We've got to have a proof of concept on the prototype;).

It is threaded, but I'll have to check on the pitch. It's fine, but I'm not sure on TPI.

It is likely metric, Rick. I just looked through the 'instruction manual' and the only dims I could find were metric (but none of the mounting hole). I've got a tap set at work I can bring home to figure out the pitch, though.

If you can come up with a simple idea I can probably make something out of acrylic. I may have some scraps laying around but I will have to check.

I was thinking about something adjustable that spans the tank from front to back (to account for different widths). Kind of like 2 pieces of plastic that are about 16" each, that could slide apart or together. Then have a piece that is adjustable in the same way that could hang from the span and allow you to adjust the depth.

Kind of span the tank like this:

the hang down thingy would maybe drape over this, or clamp to it like it was a eurobrace -- and be adjustable up and down with maybe a nylon screw or two to "lock" it in once a particular depth was selected. I can picture it in my mind, but it's hard to draw with text

Well you know those adjustable paint roller extension poles? That is what I'm kind of thinking for the piece that goes across the aquarium -- although it doesn't have to be round. Just two pieces that stay together but can slide to adjust to various widths. Kind of like this pole:

Jack, the Martha Stewart/Mac Guyver in me can't help but think that the general idea you are thinking of would be easily obtained for dirt cheap by using one of the telescoping curtain rods that are shaped sort of like a U. They are dirt cheap at Walmart and they come in all sorts of lengths so it would be pretty easy to fit to any tank size/width.

I will have to check that out, mamagoose. I think I'd then need to figure out how to rig something up to let the probe hang down at different depths. Maybe I can take the baby in tow to Walmart this weekend.
