Quarantine and a hospital

In general I refer to a tank to isolate newly purchased fish as a quarantine tank. I like to even have some LR and LS in it and never add medications to it.

If my fish are sick then I use a hospital tank. It is bare bones with only a HOB bio-wheel filter on it and some clay pots to provide hiding spots. There is nothing else in it and I dose any medications I feel I need into it.

Some people don't make a distinction between the two and use a single tank for both purposes. In such a case you don't want rock or sand in the tank as they can interfere with medications and even absorb and release them long after the disease is cured.

It depends on what size fish you plan on keeping. A 10-20 gallon is fine for either a QT or a hospital tank. Usually the fish are in QT longer than the hospital tank (at least one hopes so) so I would think the hospital tank could be smaller. Why not use the 10G for both?
