Quarantine procedures

I saw the description of quarantine procedures for the Divers Den fish on your website. I am wondering what the procedures are for the rest of the wild caught fish that you offer for sale. Are they held, treated and watched for the same amount of time or are they offered for sale sooner?

Slam I'm sure that DFS will chime in and confirm this however I believe that all of their fish brought into their facility are treated and QT'd the same whether it's a $5 fish or an exotic d.d. fish. The same goes for their corals.

slam308,

Thank you for your great question! All of the fish sold through LiveAquaria and Diver’s Den go through a quarantine period. Our Aquaculture Coral & Marine Life Facility offers a more extensive quarantine program that goes above and beyond any other facility in the industry.

Quarantine times vary for each fish, but rest assured we have qualified personnel who are able to observe these fish to ensure our fish are at their optimal health. Our livestock is of the highest quality and all facilities have strict quarantine procedures and monitoring.

At this time we do not have an exact description of our quarantine procedures from our LiveAquaria Facility as we do for our Aquaculture Coral & Marine Life Facility.

Thank you.

Do you have a rough guide as what you do? Pretty bold of your company to claim you have the best industry wide quarantine procedure and then not tell us, the customer, what it is.

What are these procedures that will make me feel confident to spend those few extras dollars to purchase all my livestock needs from your company?

honda2sk,

Thank you for your interest in the quarantine procedure for our Aquaculture Coral & Marine Life Facility. You may find the answers you are looking for in the 04/30/2007 post from our Director of LiveAquaria Kevin Kohen. You are able to find the post here:

Quarantine procedure for Marine Fish offered in the Divers Den

We hope you find this information useful. If you have further questions please let us know and we will be happy to assist you.

Thank you I read that the original day it was posted. I am referring to the quarantine procedure you claim is the best in the industry for your regular stock in California (not diver's den)

Don't get me wrong, 99% of my orders from your company have been top notch. I just find it curious that you claim your company has the best quarantine procedures in place and then go on to say you cannot supply that info. Thats the kind of answer I would expect from other vendors (that I will not call out their name, just not do business with them).

If my company did something that was the best in the industry, I would place that front and center for all to see and admire. And its not like your company was just started recently and have not had time to do this.

honda2sk,

Thank you for your patience regarding your questions on our quarantine and acclimation procedures for LiveAquaria and e-Tropicals.

Marine fish and invertebrates are flown in direct from multiple locales around the world. The fish and invertebrates are acclimated in a temperature controlled room illuminated under red lighting to not shock these animals when the boxes are opened. Fish are cut from their shipping bags and placed in polyethylene totes with shipping water. Brand new seawater of the same temperature is adjusted to a low pH to match the new shipment and this is then dripped into the totes. Water is exchanged with low pH water so that the fish will not be exposed to lethal ammonia levels that can burn there gills during acclimation. Once the inbound fish are in this low pH solution they are then acclimated to the main fish systems where they will reside after acclimation. Fish are then transferred to the holding system and covered with a tarp until they are breathing normally.

Fish are held at the aquatic center for an unspecified time which will vary depending on the species, origin and transit time. Fish that show any sign of damage or disease are transferred off the floor into a dedicated treatment system so that antibiotics can be administered to combat their specific ailment. Once the fish are healed they are then transferred back onto the floor and are offered for sale when they are eating properly and exhibiting normal behavior. They then can be screened, and selected for shipment and pack out.

We would like to also mention that the claim to having the best quarantine procedures is in regards to our Divers Den specimens.

Can we consider the Tridacna clams both in Diver's Den and the others to have undergone a strict quarantine? Pinched Mantle disease being my main concern.

tonyh67,

We appreciate your interest in the quarantine procedures for Tridacna Clams. Pinched Mantle Disease is becoming a more common problem with Tridacna Clams. During the quarantine time, both of our facilities routinely perform freshwater dips, for 30 minutes, as a precautionary measure to combat this disease. Please let us know if you have any other quarantine questions.
