Quarantine Tank Qestion

I'm going to set up a new 29L Q tank. I have a new 90 gallon tank that it will support. Are you guys establishing bacteria in your QT or are you just setting it up in a temporary fashion and doing lot of water changes and going dry between uses?

I have a HOB filter for the longer term of my protocol. During TTM I use (2) 10 gallon tanks with an air stone and heater with (1) 3 gallon water change on the 2nd day to lessen the chance of an ammonia spike.

^ That's what I do but I wouldn't say I do a lot of water changes when in use. Just when I feel it is necessary to maintain good water quality.

depends on what you're going for. i personally like to have a fully cycled "grow out" tank, combined with TTM (Tank Transfer Method).

typically what i do is run the fish(es) through TTM, then place them in to the full cycled grow out system for a few more weeks of observation and heavy feeding.

if you're going to skip on TTM then it would probably be easiest to use a fully cycled tank, as it will cut down on the maintenance you will need to do (keeping ammonia in check can be tough work).

i usually keep a few sponges and some extra chunks of rock in the sump of my display. that way, if i need something to quickly cycle a new system, i have options.

HOB filter with no GAC, just sponges that I have had sitting in the DT sump for some number of months. 20% water change each week.
