Quarantine Tank Question

How frequently so you do water changes? What percent? Is a small PH sufficient in a small quarantine tank? Is an air stone recommended?

Craig, when I have a quarantine setup, I use the old water from my main tank to do water changes with. I don't use a powerhead, but an air driven sponge filter that is kept in my sump until needed. When done, it's rinsed clean and tossed back into the sump until needed again. Now that's for fish in quarantine, for SPS I use a SEIO for flow.

Thanks Konadog. I think I have a sponge filter laying around somewhere, with a little aquaclear hob fresh water filter that was never used. That should do the trick.

I use a maxi jet 1200 and a magnum HOB filter on a 20Gal long tank, I had the hob filter on the sump of my main tank for over a week before moving it to the QT tank to get it seeded, it wasn't enough and the QT still cycled.
we've pretty much been doing 50% daily water changes since then, (on week 5 now)

ps. you might want to work on that patience, less then an hour before complaining about the lack of replies ? :rolleye1:

I use water from my main tank for water changes, My qt is a 12g eclipse system with the filter/biowheel and light attached to the hood. It has a small heater. I do a water change about once a week, I use water from my main tank for water changes.

Water from your main tank will definately help and I do use an airstone. I figure the extra air can't hurt anything and it also breaks up the surface junk that can keep gas exchange down. Run the hob filter on your main tank for about a month. Test the ammonia in the qt everyother day and if it gets high do water change. Keeping ammonia down is the hardest part of the qt IMO. Also you may want a lid on that to keep the fish from jumping. They always seem jumpy in the qt.

I change out about 25% of the water every week with water from the main tank, maxi 1200 for water movement, and a HOB filter (an old Whisper I think). No substrate - just one large piece of LR.

I wouldn't add live rock in case you need to dose a med. Will kill the live rock. Definately no substrate and maybe a few good sized pvc pipes for the fish to take cover.
