Quarantine Tank Question

I set up a quarantine tank (20 Long) with no sand or rock. It has a hang on filter with some carbon in a small bag. When not using the tank what do you do to keep it ready so if I buy some fish on impulse it will be ready to go, Can you cover it to prevent evaporation? Do you need to keep the filter running?

Thanks

I have a 20 long QT with an Aquaclear HOB. I always keep extra sponges for the filter in my sump so I have bacteria already populated when I want/need to use the QT. It still takes a bit for the bacteria to adjust to the load, but only a few days to a week at most.

I've since startyed also using 2" cubed Marinepure the same way. One cube fits right inside the HOB and since using them I usually have no ammonia from day one.

I think it depends on what your qt procedures entails. Like sierra suggested you can keep a sponge filter in your sump of the main tank and that should give you the bio load needed to get the qt going when needed. If medicating in the qt, some medication tend to kill the good bacteria so frequent water changes are required. I always take my qt tank down, sanitize it and set it up only when needed. I personally do TTM and then into a tank with a small piece of live rock they go for observation.

Great question! I too have a 20 Gallon long that I plan to use for a QT. would if be wise for the QT to have a hob with UV sterilizer?
