Quarantine tank requirements

What is the least amount of equipment for a quarantine tank. 10 gallon with a Walmart hang on filter work?

And a heater and thermometer. I like Aquaclears for filters. 10g is small enough that I don't think you need a powerhead for circulation as long as the hang-on filter is big enough.

A light isn't needed, but makes inspection of the fish MUCH easier.

Yes, although if you don't have the tank yet I suggest getting a 20 gallon long tank as it gives you more flexibility and the ability to accommodate larger fish. Petco puts their tanks on sale for $1 per gallon fairly frequently.

A heater if your room temperature isn't a consistent 75-79 degrees. A couple of pieces of pvc for the fish to hide in (I use a 3" T and a 4" elbow, but a couple of 5" long tubes of 3" pipe would work just fine). A small powerhead for additional circulation in the tank. Some sort of lid to keep the fish from jumping.

You don't need light as the ambient light from the room will suffice.

Good deal. I think I have all of that to start a quarantine tank. Do I just use my tank water or new salt water? I've never quarantined new fish, I always just acclimated and dumped them in. I guess I've been lucky. I've inly had 1 blue hippo with ochre but I could never get a blue hippo to live anyway

+1 on the 20-29g tank. you would then be able to keep moderate size fish for extended periods. also allows for keeping multiple fish.

I would also get a cover for the top(eggcrate, etc). I now have had 2 fish jump out of my QT tank when not covered.

I dont even bother with a heater during this time of year. My room temp is around 75-80.

I keep an AquaClear70 on my 29g. Its about 40 bucks on amazon/ebay.
Also use whatever small powerhead I have available.

You can use either new or tank water. During the latter half of the quarantine period, do some water changes with tank water to begin acclimating your fish to your tank water.

You should be able to get a hippo tang to live if your water parameters are good and stable.

I would not skip on the heater during QT. Last thing you need to do is introduce another stressor like a temp fluctuation. Tiny heaters like that are super cheap anyway.

What type of fish are you trying to QT? I don't know if I would put a tang in 10G tank, that might add to the stress. I have a 20g tank for my QT and part of me feels like I still need a bigger QT. The last fish I QTd was a velvet multicolored wrasse that was about 4" long and he looked cramped in there.
