Quarantine tank setup

Hey everybody,

How does everybody set up their QT tanks?

Do you have a skimmer on it? Any substrate?

What type of copper or other medications do you use on the QT tank?

When using copper and other fluke/worm medications, do you worry about the meds knocking out the biological filtration?

Also, just trying to get an idea of what is the best setup for a stress free and parasite eradicating QT.

Cheers,
John

Usually QT's contain no substrate and only a hob filter, heater, and small power head. Some people add PVC pipes that way fish have a spot to hide. As far as dosing meds it depends what your trying to treat

I use a bare bottom QT; with a heater, small powerhead and HOB powerfilter. Aquaclear makes a HOB powerfilter that comes with these sponge/foam inserts that you can "seed" with bacteria from your DT ahead of time (props to Mr. Tusk).

IME, all of the common meds used (Prazi, copper, antibiotics) have little to no impact on biological filtration. I also just use PVC elbows for hiding places.

Thanks for the clarification! Is this knowledge of the low impact on biological filtration based on your own experiences using hobby tests?

I ask because I hear all kinds of different things out there about the damage that is done to the biological filtration by prazipro and copper.

John

I use one of these at all times during QT. It's never detected any ammonia during Prazi/copper treatment. So, that means my biological filter must still be working.

Read what Seachem, maker of Cupramine , says about bio-filter damage. Its in the FAQ section. http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/Cupramine.html

Cupramine will not wipe out a bio-filter. Prazi-Pro is the safest med I
know of. It can even be used in a reef tank. I've used both Cupramine and Prazi-Pro with an incredible number of fish in my QT. never any bio-filter problem. These questions come up a lot, I've never seen any evidence that either product will kill a bio-filter.
