Quarantine Tank

As I mentioned in my other post, I haven't had corals in the past. Since that was the case, I never quarantined fish, since I coul treat the whole tank if needed (never had to though).

For a quarantine tank, what would I need? I figure I could just get a cheapy tank set-up and take water and sand out of the main tank for it. What medications should I use?

That should be all that is required for a quarantine tank, but then i don't use one. But if you are treating for ick, hopefully some one will chime in, as I have never had the problem yet so cannot advise you on best meds to use.

We use a ten gallon tank with a cheap filter, no sand (treatment can affect the sand or it can harbor the parasite). We usually keep our fish in there for about a month. We only use meds if the fish get sick. We had a tang that had ick while in quarantine and we treated him with some ick med that we picked up at our LFS. Some people quarantine any livestock including coral before adding them to their tanks. Some people do a dip such as fresh water or iodine before putting their livestock into the quarantine tank. We just watch our fish for any signs of sickness or parasites and then research and treat the symptoms.

Depending on the size and amount of fish you are going to quarantine then you decide on the tank size. I would go for smaller tanks and never do too many at once since they have territory issues. For me, I used a 29g tank with just regular hang on the back filter system. I'm not into medications unless I have to with the more serious symptoms like fungus or parasites. I like to treat my fish with garlic enhanced formula foods when they have ich. I would suggest Formula 2, but with their recent changes, it's NOT as good as it used to be. I'm being told by them that they will bring back the original formula but we will see about that. So another thing you could do is dip food into fresh garlic juice. Another thing that is popular to do is hyposalinity. Where you bring down salinity level down to 1.015 if I remember right, you have to read up on that part.
