Quarantine Tips methods suggestions

Ok, well my DT is getting rather stocked and growing out nicely.

I do plan to add some more SPS, but at this point certainly don't want to run risk of getting any bugs.

So what is the ideal way to QT.
I will setup a small 20-30g tank. Have an extra 250 w mh and heater. Also have a HOB for flow.

I figure I will just do WC on my DT and use that water for the QT tank.

How long to QT, what do I add to be sure I am pest free. Do most dip corals and then just add back to QT for a week, dip again, back to QT, etc....
Or do you add chems to the QT tanks? I think I am good for killing FW and red bugs with some dips of Bayer and Coral rx or Revive.

But not sure on what definitly kills AEFW.

Thanks for your input

Oh come on, add in some AEFW go Expert mode ;)

What is it like 6 weeks with dips every week. Revive & Bayer both kill/knock off AEFW.

I wouldn't trust revive but Bayer works great. +1 on the 6 weeks but I dip twice a week. I always have 2 containers, 1 for dipping and one of fresh tank water to do a " rinse" before they go back into QT.

Ok, so set up QT tank. Anything in it? or just corals?
Dip in bayer, rinse and then put in QT. Redip in Bayer 5-7 days later, rinse putt back in QT...Repeat for 6 weeks. Inspect corals along way.

Bayer good for all pests or is it not gonna kill something?
Which bayer product. Home & pest or the complete insect. Also at what dose? The thread on it is all over the place, not sure which product is the ideal one and at what ratio.

Any issues with colors over the 6 weeks and numerous dips?

What shrimp do you suggest for QT?

page 24 of that redbug thread has a good summary of the entire thread. It lists what others have used, how much, and how much time. I received a bunch of infected frags a few weeks ago and I have them in QT, dipping once a week with Bayer Advanced Concentrate at about 1 cup to gallon of tank water. My corals have PE back within 1-4 hours of the dip. I'm happy with it so far and I'm going to continue for 8 weeks.

have a 20g set up for qt, bare bottom, live rock and a power head...just added hob filter but tank went for a year plus without. Lighting is diy LED in a gutted halide pendant. Water changes are done every once in a while and detritus is syphoned out then. Livestock is two emerald crabs that get spot fed, blue leg hermits, blue damsel, zoas and ric's.
Simple set up, easy to maintain and definitely worth every penny

good luck

Here are some pics of my QT. It's a 36x18x12 with a 20L sump. I have a SWC 160 cone and lots of LR in the sump. I also run carbon and GFO in a reactor. I have 3 t5's and 12 cree blue LED's over it. I figure if I am going to QT SPS, they might as well get good lighting and filtration. Because if the water is crap, so will be the color of my acros. Then I will be guessing if there are pests on corals but really it's because the water is crappy. I just started this after I had AEFW in my DT, and throughout the last 9-10 weeks I have been dipping with Bayer, and have seen good growth and kept most all the color during that time.

Awesome, thanks for the info and pics....

I am getting the exact tank. It's a 30g breeder right. Safet to drill for and overflow looks like out the back?

Oh, do you do anything for CAL & ALK or just do WC's? I was considering doing like weekly 5g WC's taken from DT to frag tank?

This one is drilled on the back, But I would prefer it had been thru the bottom. Less noise and you will get a better surface skim for detritus etc.

I thought weekly to bi weekly WC's would keep up, but they didnt. But this all depends on how much coral you have in the tank. I ended up dosing for alk and cal manually.

This is definitely something a lot more reefer should be concerned about.

Sounds good. Just the basics, that is all you really need.

Nothing else is really needed.

I like to put some "sweet tasting" sacrificial frags next to any new corals. Particularly ones that red bugs show up really well on. Browned out acros are the best for spotting red bugs and even AEFW bite marks. Some monti plates to see if any monti eating nudibranchs show up on them.

I do this as well. Works great. Although I will two part dose sometimes to keep parameters correct.

How long to QT, what do I add to be sure I am pest free.

I usually go 3 to 4 weeks. Whatever it is usually shows it ugly head within that time. I only go longer if something looks unusual for some reason or came from a questionable or infected source.

Do most dip corals and then just add back to QT for a week, dip again, back to QT, etc.....

I have found that that 9 out of 10 times your new corals are just fine and don't have any pests.

Why stress them halfway to death with all these dips and poisons if they are pest free? My new corals seem to be a lot healthier and adapt a lot better to their new home if I don't nuke them with something if I don't have to. Whatever you decide to use, to kill whatever pest, is unfortunately almost killing your coral as well.

That is the whole idea of QTing them. To find out IF they have a pest.

IF they do, THEN you nuke the hell out of them to try to rid them of whatever they have.
If you then kill the coral getting rid of the pest, Oh well. It is a lot better than infecting and killing off your DT.

But not sure on what definitly kills AEFW.

Neither is anyone else. Lol.

Just look at all the posts out there. They all swear that their "magic potion" is the best and then the next guy chimes in with "it didn't work for me"

What shrimp do you suggest for QT?

I don't.

If you interceptor your QT to get rid of your newly aquired red bugs your shrimp is usually toast. Any Bayer residue does this as well. So why waste the shrimp?

I have one on mine. I don't think it is essential but I think it helps. More oxygen in the water if nothing else.

U keeping any lr in the QT tank

I do have some in mine but not a lot of it. I think it provides some biological filtration. A HOB I feel would do the same thing. Just to make sure any die off of anything doesn't lead to an ammonia and/or nitrite spike in your water.

One more thing.

Go out and buy some cheap magnifying reading glasses. I don't care how good your eyesight is. They make everything look huge, makes pests a lot easier to spot.

Poor mans Mesoscope.

:)
