Quarantine

I would like to make a small, simple quarantine tank to hold fish which are struggling or new. I plan on a 10 gal w/ a power head and lights. My question is how long is an acceptable quarantine period? Anything else I need to think about?

4 weeks at a minumum, and 6 weeks is better ;)

You want a good fully seeded bio filter. I find those air driven sponge filters and penguin biowheel filters are good for that. The sponge filter or bio wheel can be left in the sump of the display tank to remain active in between uses, as well as placing it there to seed prior to the initial use. A good heater is also wise, as well as hiding places to provide cover. In the QT I like to use PVC pipe pieces and fittings for cover as they are easily cleaned and will not react with any medications you might need to use.

I agree, but I would keep the QT running all the time. I have mine running at all times so I dont have to keep setting it up and tearing it down.

I started mine by doing a waterchange on my main display and added the 12 gallons the my QT tank. Ity was running and ready for fish immediatly. It is also a good ide to have a air stone int he QT tank to help keep the PH balanced.
