i have 40 gallon breeder setup with a 15 gallon sump.i use red sea coral pro salt. i do a 5 gallon water change every 2 weeks.by doing that do i really need a 2 part additive my reading are in range.all i have now is a bunch of soft corals and about three frag sps corals and a monti.does useing 2 part additives or calcium reactors come into play when ya have alot more sps corals that eat up calcium.i dont know by doing water changes every 2 weeks help. cause my levels really dont bounce around my alk, mag, are always good my calcium might drop a little here and there.

thanks for any advise

kinda funny, I have a 40 breeder with a 15g sump. name isn't Bill is it?
anyway I do a 5g change then a 10g bi-weekly. I use reef crystals. I use to use instant ocean, but would have to add cal/alk/mag. since switching over to reef crystals I have not had to add the 2-part. I think as long as your demand isn't too high you'll be fine with just the water changes, provided your salt has plenty.

How is your coraline growth? If you are having to scrape coraline off your glass from time to time, you are probably good to go with the low calcium demand of your corals.

Add as you need it. If you alk and cal are where they need to be with out an additive than you currently don't need it. When your sps corals get larger than you may have use an additive. key is monitor it.

I, too, have a 40 with a 15 gallon sump. And my name begins with a "B", it's three letters long, but it ain't Bill.

I dose daily. I keep a mixed reef, that is mainly LPS and softies. As long as WCs keep your alk, ca and mag at appropriate levels, you should be fine. I do far fewer WCs that you, so that may be the difference. Also, I switched to making my own two part a couple years ago. I use Randy's recipes and I buy my ingredients from Bulk Reef Supply. It's a lot cheaper in the long run.

The best measure of you success is the health of your livestock. Watching them closely over time will tell you if your methodology is sufficient. The test kits give us a good place to start.

One wrote that your ca bounces around. One thing you should do is make sure they are in balance. An imbalance can cause one to drive the other down. I'm guessing you're fine, though. What are your levels anyway?

Cheers,
Ben

How new is your tank? I didn`t have to start dosing anything in my 90 until it was 8-9 months old. My water changes keep everything in balance. Not any more though.

its about 2 months old i transferd all my live rock and corals from my 24 gallon aquapod.that tank was over a year old when i did the change and with the aquapod i never really used b-ionic just weekly water changes of 3 gallons i was just curious once i get more corals in my tank thats when i will notice i will have to add something to the water than just water changes to keep my levels in check.

My 90 just started to require the supplement big time. I had a perfect storm. I used up some extra Red Sea Salt (not the coral pro), went on vacation, and my tank watcher forgot to add the 2 part while i was gone. Basically now all the SPS I have is suffering from tissue necrosis and one is bleaching. Now I have got them on coral pro salt for changes and extra 2-part and my levels are back to normal. But the coral growth took a big hit.

Bottom line, test your water and you should be able to tell from that.
