My blenny decided to jump a few weeks back. He gave no signs or warnings; so I was unable to thwart his attempts at suicide =( Needless to say this leaves room in my aquarium for some more personality. I am about to switch from my 34g solana to a 24x24x16" tank, external overflow, etc etc etc. So I'll be getting a lot of tank real estate back. Current livestock includes 2 x ocsellaris clowns and 1 x pygmy possum wrasse. I like these fish because I am lazy when it comes to feeding. They usually get to eat every couple of days (2-3) and are still quite happy and healthy.
Now I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with bangaii cardinals - I'm thinking of picking up 3. Basically can they survive on a light feeding schedule such as the one mentioned above?
Next I'm considering getting a blue spotted jawfish. I've read a lot about how it is very important to get a healthy specimen - but all of that aside I've also read that they should be fed frequently. Has anyone been able to keep these guys on a lighter feeding schedule? I am willing to increase feeding frequency to every 1-2 days in order to meet their needs just because the fish is so damned cool. Secondly I only have enough tropic-eden reef flakes to create a ~1.3" sand bed according to the GARF sand bed calculator. Can anyone with experience with these fish give me some insight into how deep of a sand bed is actually required for them? I've read anywhere from 1"-6" so it's a little ambiguous. I'd certainly provide him with lots of rubble to build with - I'm just hoping 1.3" would be enough in addition to lots of rubble.
So ultimately my final bio-load for a 24x24x16" tank (~40gallons) + ~10gallon sump would be:
2 x ocellaris clowns
1 x pygmy possum wrasse
3 x bangaii cardinals
1 x blue spotted jawfish
1 x small clown goby to play where's waldo with
cleaner shrimp + purple banded coral shrimp + misc snails & hermits
Does that sound like too much for a 40g? I'd prefer to keep the bio-load light - but I also don't want to push it. Thanks for your time and attention!
