Question about Diaphragm Pump

If I place the pump about 3-4ft above the reservoir and sump should I still add a check valve? I'm thinking I shouldn't have to worry about backsiphoning with the pump up higher than both.

As long as the output tube is above the waterline this should work fine. It is a good idea to test it first just to make sure, but I see no issue with this.

What is the recommended max run time on these? I know they are not good for continuous, but is there a limit? Is it a cooling issue such that cycled on and off with cooldown time, it could run for a total of 1-2hr per day?

I use two ebay peristaltics now to do a slow water change daily, roughly 3 gallons is pumped out with roughly 10ft of head pressure. Standard pump is used to "top-off" with fresh salt water during this time period. The peristaltics were cheap but loud and I need to replace them with something better now that I know the process as a whole is feasible.

They have a 25% duty cycle so 6 hours a day. Occasional use over this will not kill the pump but will reduce its life. We tested for 7 weeks continuous use 100% duty cycle before failure, they are tough little pumps.
