question about gig. nem

Is it normal for it to pulse its tentacles more at night then in the day time? During the day time the carpet moves it tentacles somewhat slowly and gently but for some reason at night time its like the thing drinks four or five pots of coffee or something. The tentacles pulse or wave around the mouth violently. My PH don't run on any night cycle so there is no change in that.

My parms are fine and stable.

Amon 0
trite 0
trate 15-20 has been for around 5 yrs
ph 8.3
calc 430-450
mag 1300
salt 1.026

I run no moon lights, the carpet is sticky and eats. The mouth is closed tight. The carpet has not really moved since I placed it in the tank.

Thanks-

IMO, if you can see the tentacles wiggle, you don't have enough flow!

How long have you had it? Everyone around here seems to like to here about gigantea and see pictures, as they are kind of the holly grail for anemone keepers.:D

I agree, if you can see the tentacles wiggling on their own, there probably isn't enough flow! However, the fact that they do "wiggle" seems to be normal Gigantea behavior.

Are you keeping this in a nano, as per your signature?

I have had it dor a little over two weeks. It is about 6 inches round atm. I will be moving it to a larger tank that I have in the works. But for now its in a tank around 30g. I recently added 3 PH to the tank on a wavemaker to change up the flow.

I have 3 K1 and a tunze 6045 on the tank.
at any given time there is always around 35x turnover. I dont think its the flow honestly. When then would it change all of a sudden at night, if it was a flow problem I would think that the tentacle movement would be constant all day long. Am I wrong to think that way?

I was thinking that it might be a PH change at night. At least that is what I hoping to hear from people.

I posted pictures about two weeks ago on here to get the carpet properly ID as best as we could. I will try to get a short movie clip tonight to show you a comparison between night and day.

here is a couple new pictures

I am jealous! That is a good looking specimen. Tenticle vibration is a good thing. My guess is that the increased activity at night is a natural feeding response, either because you have some nocturnal prey in your tank or because in nature there is more prey in the dark.
I am not saying that the tentacle vibration is a result of flow .... it's that I have so much flow (~8000gph) that I cant see the tentacles vibrate at all, so I don't know if there is or isn't increased activity in the dark.

There are many ways to skin a cat, but the FEW examples of gigantea kept in captivity for more than a year are in tanks with a lot of surging flow, and MH lights.

Hmm..., maybe its time to get out the red light to see if its some pods running around. Never thought about that. Your jealous of mine and I am jealous of you. I wish mine would have stayed on the top of the tank or at least on the rocks. I placed him/her there and it moved towards the bottom of the tank and has not moved since.

There is a ton more flow at the top of my tank then there is at the bottom. I think mine has moved away from the strong flow. Who knows???

How much flow do you have going across the carpet EJ? and how big is that carpet?

Funny thing also happened today my female clown is starting to rest inside the carpet. :-) One more thing to watch........

Thanks again

Mine actually didnt like too much flow. It moved slightly to recieve less flow against some rockwork. No increased acrtivity at night tho for mine, did seem to stay on the rockwork though.

Flow is provided by 2 vortechs, normally on reefcrest mode, but occasionally i switch to pulse for a few hours when im home. Seems to do the trick for the last 6 months :)

Pictures are required for all S. gigantea posts:D If you fail to cooperate, the mods will be notified:rollface:

When it was in my 60 cube, it could touch the overflow and come within 3" of the front glass, so i estimate it to be around 16-18" at its biggest. Right now tt is 8" from a vortech that is set on random between 1000gph and 3600gph.
