Question about lighting for a Crocea Clam.

I have a 170g display tank, 72x18x30, with two 32" LED lights. They are the same as the Reefbreeders sold here. I don't have any problems growing SPS, and in fact have struggled with too much light on the bottom, having to hide corals in the shadows. I have a 16" Squammie that is doing very well.

Specifications:

◇ 90 deg lens to penetrate the depth of water.
◇ 99pcs 3W bridgelux LEDs.
◇ 31.5" long x 8.5" wide x 2.4" tall.

Dimensions 31.5″x8.5″x2.5″
Wattage at Full Power 215watts
At Half Power 115watts
MH Comparison 2x 250watt
Number of LEDs 99

Do you guys think I'll be okay with a new Crocea I have coming in? I thought I would place it mid-tank once it's acclimated and see how its doing.

What do you think?

great looking tank.

i've never been able to give my crocea too much light. right now he is at the tip top of my rock spire in my 160, about 3 inches below the water surface, with my AI Vegas about 4 inches above the water surface, and he still is trying to get more light.

so i would say start him out mid way, but be prepared to move him up.

Okay, I created a flat - ish spot mid tank in anticipation of the clam's arrival. I've heard you only want to move them every couple weeks to avoid shock. What am I looking for to determine if the clam is getting enough or not enough light? what are the signs and symptoms of lack of light?

If I see those signs and symptoms I can move him to a higher location.

Most of the indicators of not enough light are lagging indicators. So in many respects you need to kind of make educated guesses as to what you think will work best.

It also helps to know the specific clam. As odd as that sounds. There is a certain vibrant hue my crocea has when it's getting enough light. It just looks good and healthy. Which I know isn't very helpful and is a massively subjective statement.

She'll growth around the margins is a good indicator of longer term health. Intake siphon that looks correct for the species is another. Good quick reactions to stimuli e.g. overhead shading is a positive sign.

No problem. Forgot to mention, them moving around is usually an indicator of unhappiness as well. Might be lighting, might be flow, might be something else, but keep an eye out for him not attaching, flipping off the rock, rotating around, etc...

Again I've so far never been able to give my crocea too much light. I saw a paper of par levels a while back that had T. crocea at the top of the list for 600+ umol

Okay. Good stuff. The plan was to place him on top of a flat 6" long rock which is mid-tank. That will be quite a bit of light right in the middle of the tank, because of the cross-over from the beams (light funnel) from the two 32" LED lights.

I think the fact that Petco bought out Live Aquaria is starting to rear its ugly head. I order two clams, a war coral and a wrasse. Wrasse coming out of CA and the rest coming out of WI. I get the WI box and im missing the crocea clam. No wrasse on the door step. I call LA and they say accounting says there were two clams in the shipment so were calling the clam farm to see if there were two in there. The wrasse is floating around in UPS limbo, but will be delivered tomorrow... Maybe. I say there was one clam so i dont care what the clam farm says. How do we resolve this? We'll send you an email.... Thanks.

Well, after calling them multiple times I finally was able to secure a credit for the missing clam, a dead wrasse and the shipping... and they gave me free shipping on the next order. I have to say they were very polite. I can't complain about that. Just disappointed in the way the first order went down.

A couple of my friends and I went in on another order, so I have a clam coming. Fortunately or unfortunately they were out of the Croceas so I have a T. Max coming. The tank is seasoned, 1.5 years old, the system is 470g total volume, 170g DT and 300g sump, so I have good healthy filtration, and lighting. I'll give the T. Max a try. I'll have the clam Tuesday. Fingers crossed!! :fish1:

Maxima came in. I floated the bag for two hours, and I'm slow drip acclimating it right now.

Quick question. It looks like his bissels had a grab on three little pieces of coral. He's let go of all but one of them. Is that a bad sign or do they often let go of some of the small coral bits they were hanging onto?

Thanks.

Well, drip acclimated for two hours...

Put him in the tank and he was almost fully out immediately.... good reaction to light. Looks good so far. Fed a bunch of phyto to help the two little guys out....

I placed him on a clam disc this morning. Once he attaches do you suggest moving him up in the tank? He seems to be fine on the floor? I am hitting them with quite a bit of light from the two equivalent 300W LEDS...
